•Generative AI could enhance tourist experience and business performance.•Shortcomings of generative AI include quality of data and accuracy of output.•A tourism-specific generative AI concept with multistakeholder datasets is proposed.•Preliminary finetuning of a Large Language Model shows encouraging results.
