Evaluating input changes in a given facility--Iron making

Myles G Boylan

Omega, 1980, vol. 8, issue 5, 517-531

Abstract: This paper examines the effects of changes in the nature and mix of inputs on an otherwise essentially stable processing technology. The impact of the benefication and agglomeration (pelletizing) of iron ore on blast furnace productivity is shown to transcend both the usually postulated, overly simplified, models of such effects and also the expectations of managements themselves. Analysis of the physical performance and financial data for three major American blast furnace installations demonstrates the pervasive changes brought about by what, at first glance, may seem no more than a simple substitution among inputs.
