•Mining industry leaders in Poland are working towards the principles of sustainable development (environmental).•Polish mining companies are reporting in line with the guidelines non-financial data.•Large mining companies care about its image as a business friendly environment and society.•Mining fee supplies local budgets supporting investment in environmental protection indirectly.
