•Conventional wisdom about the types of countries that create SWFs no longer hold.•International reserve balances are not a significant predictor of SWF creation.•Evidence that current account surpluses lead to SWF creation is limited.•Resource dependence remains the most predictive indicator of SWF creation.•GDP growth is also a robust predictor of SWF creation.
