Jinsong Tao, Samee Ur Rehman, Rahat Ali and Syed Ali Raza

Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2025, vol. 222, issue C

Abstract: The growing demand for reliable power distribution has heightened the importance of advanced monitoring and diagnostic techniques for power cable aging. This review explores contemporary advancements and challenges in monitoring systems for power cables, focusing on both electrical and non-electrical parameters. Key topics covered include partial discharge (PD) detection methods, sheath voltage and current monitoring, and insulation dielectric loss measurements. Additionally, recent innovations in thermal monitoring using fiber optics and infrared thermography are evaluated. The review also delves into the integration of smart grid technologies and machine learning to enhance real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance. Despite significant progress, challenges such as electromagnetic interference, sensor limitations, and data management complexities persist. Addressing these issues is critical for ensuring the safety and longevity of power transmission infrastructure. The review concludes with future prospects for optimizing power cable monitoring through emerging technologies and more resilient diagnostic systems.
