Abstract:
The paper presents case studies of three Polish enterprises which were successful in the 1980s. The source materials were interviews with directors of Polish enterprises as well as case studies published between 1984 and 1990 in the journal Zarzadzanie (Management) devoted to the problems of management and the economics of enterprises. In 1983 this periodical was strongly opposed to by many members of the ruling communist party because of its viewpoint on professionalizing management. According to the official standpoint of the political administration in Poland, directors of enterprises were people temporarily fulfilling their duties as heads, but not professional managers. Such people -- full of initiative, struggling for market success -- as the chiefs of the three companies presented, were not met frequently, especially in the state sector of the economy. They were really romantics, believing that market economy must finally become obligatory in Poland.
