Abstract:
•Welfare entry and exit were associated with worse mental health for adolescents.•These negative effects were significant in rural areas but not urban areas.•Welfare entry was associated with worse mental health for urban boys.•Welfare entry/exit and stay were associated with worse mental health for rural girls.•These effects should be taken into consideration in future policy and services.
