The Nordic telecottages: Community teleservice centres for rural regions

Abstract: In Scandinavia a growing number of telecottages -- or Community TeleService Centres, as they are officially called -- have become operative in recent years. Their main function is to provide isolated village communities with access to telecommunications and information services. The background and origins of the telecottages are examined and their structure and functions described. An evaluation of their contribution to local communities is made as well as an assessment of their future potential and development, particularly in the context of a developing country.
