Abstract:
This paper is based on a report(1) completed by a study team from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts in cooperation with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's (PTO) Technology Assessment and Forecast (TAF) Program. The paper examines the expiration of U.S. patents due to the nonpayment of the first of three recently instituted patent maintenance fees.
