Abstract:
Two samples were taken of U.S. patents in biotechnology published in 1982 and 1983. Patents were found published within three years of the base year protecting aspects of the same research and properties of these groups were explored. Overlap with journal articles was sought for a sample of groups. The overall figures of 42% and 57% disguise wide variations in coverage. Around half the projects are dealt with, but it is noteworthy that there are no references to patents in the articles.
