Search tools at the European Patent Office: a new approach

Abstract: The EPO has modified its approach to computer-aided searching. The existing system EPOQUE I, which enables search examiners to interrogate from their workstations various internal and external databases to obtain an initial list of possibly relevant documents, is now to be extended by EPOQUE II to narrow down this list to an average of 20 documents per search. These latter documents can then be studied in depth by means of the BACON Numeric Service (BNS) to allow the examiner to make the final selection of documents for citation. EPOQUE II includes the full character coded text and every drawing from one document per patent family of the minimum PCT collection from 1970 onwards and includes a navigation tool to enable examiners to identify and access sub-sections of the text, e.g. description of the drawings, example of the invention, etc. The BNS will retrieve the final 20 or so selected documents from a comprehensive electronic library (20 million documents captured under the BACON project) and present them to the examiner on screen or as a printout with a response time of 15 min.
