Abstract:
In the context of the growing worldwide trend towards the electronic filing of patent applications, the article outlines the main features of the PCT-SAFE system, developed and operated by the Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This system enables companies and individuals from the 123 countries that have signed up to the WIPO-administered Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) to file their international patent applications electronically with the PCT receiving office at WIPO's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The main advantages of using the software, the provision of digital certificates, the revised PCT fee structure for electronic applications, and proposed future developments, are outlined.
