The use of patent information in industry

J. Stephenson

World Patent Information, 1982, vol. 4, issue 4, 164-171

Abstract: The way in which patent information is used by individuals in industry and research teams has been investigated by a series of case studies. Additionally a publicity scheme was mounted in collaboration with Newcastle Patent Library in an attempt to increase the use of the collection. The results emphasise the similarities rather than the differences between the problems that users have in using patents and other information sources. The particular contribution which patents can make in industrial activity was well shown, but if this contribution is to be more widely recognised then the precise needs of the end user must be identified and used to match the information to the task in hand; the availability of an active (patent) information officer as intermediary between the information supplier and the end-user is considered to be of high importance. Some evidence was found to show that low level of use can be significant but little was found on the economic benefits to individual firms, due mainly to a lack of awareness in companies of the financial gain or loss relating to patents.
