All change on the workplace front: trends and topics in qualitative case study research

Abstract: Amid concerns over displacement by ‘big surveys’, this research examines the flow and content of workplace case study research across ten major journals over a 25-year period (2000–24). After an initial phase of growth, which peaked in 2013, the flow of case study articles declined sharply, notably among researchers at British and Irish universities. At the same time, case studies became, almost exclusively, a method for examining workplace change. Consciously or otherwise, an emerging strand of this research evaluates the distributional impact of such changes. Together, these trends present two challenges: the need to establish causal links between organizational change and wider economic and political processes and the need to develop a common framework for assessing the impact of organizational change on labour.
