Abstract: "The article presents quantitative estimates about the value of the elimination and amelioration of tuberculosis from a health and welfare standards of living perspective, in twentieth century England and Wales. By applying an original methodology, qualitative tuberculosis data has been transformed into a quantitative index in order to calculate the (monetary) value of the decline in the burden of tuberculosis. While it is not possible to determine a precise value, at a lower bound approximate the elimination and amelioration of tuberculosis in twentieth century England and Wales is estimated to be in excess of £30 billion. Such significant results have important implications for our understanding about the achievements associated with combating tuberculosis and the wider optimism this adds to stories about living standards in twentieth century England and Wales."
