THE INFLUENCE OF HAVING A HOUSEWIFE MOTHER ON CHILDREN’S LONG RUN ACHIEVEMENT: CASE OF IZMIR

Abstract: Success, which is mostly seen as an internal talent within a child, is indeed also influenced by many external factors including the behaviour of their parents during their childhood. Though father is an important figure, the role of the mother in child’s development is indisputable. Perhaps, the most influential role model for the child in life is mother. In this respect it the influence of the occupation of a mother, especially whether the mother is working or not becomes an important factor to analyze. The main concern is that maternal employment obviously restricts the amount of time available for raising children well. The aim of this paper is to answer two questions. The first one is whether having a housewife mother has any influence on the long run achievement of the children. And the second one is about intergenerational attitude of this. The paper asks whether the men that used to have housewife mother would also prefer to have a housewife wife, or not. Current income of the individuals is used as a proxy for their achievement. OLS and probit models are used for the analysis. The results show that having a housewife mother increases the sons’ long run achievement, while it has no significant effect on daughters’ success. This is explained by the two opposing factors that a housewife mother may cause. The first one, more time spent with children, is valid also for males and it has a positive influence on success. Opposing factor is the fact that, female children take their mother as a model and if the mother is a housewife her daughter also tends to be a housewife.Furthermore, the results show that a man that has a housewife mother would indeed prefer to have a housewife wife with 14% higher probability.
