Abstract: After examining the transformations of the environmental question and the capacity of the western world to respond to it, the basic role played by industry is highlighted. After calling attention to the enormous costs which the environmental struggle involves, it is pointed out that the challenge for industry consists in finding a formula for industrial modernisation in the environment, as well as new fields of activity, research and employment. Finally, a call is made to collaboration between the Government and companies as the only way achieve efficient management of the environment which, based on market mechanisms, allow each sector and each company to optimise its environmental effort.
