Abstract: The amount of money spent on the health-care service has shown an important increase over recent years. This paper gives an overview of the Basque health service from an economic viewpoint. The way the Basque public health system is financed in the Basque Country is describes together with the organizational and financiar changes which have occurred during recent years. Afterwards the populations'''''''' health cover is analyzed together with health expenditure in both the public and private sectors and the health service''''''''s functioning, with special attention being paid to the consumption of medicines and hospital attention. Finally, a brief look is made at those factors which will influence the future development of health expenditure, and the feasibility of its growth during a time of economic crisis is questioned.
