Abstract: This article analyzes the evolution, and the current crisis of the so-called Welfare State. First, the evolution of the deficit of the public sector in OECD countries is studied with a special emphasis on the analysis of the items wich compose the Welfare State. The author then interprets the causes of the crisis, and studies the implications of the various political models in the maintenance and evolution of the Welfare State. The study ends with consideration to the various measures to contain its cost, with special attention to labour market reform, so as to achieve a sustainable public budget in the medium run.
