Abstract:
This article provides the European Commissions point of view on working time reduction and employment. The Commission has been involved in this discussion for twenty years and it has maintained, from the very beginning, its consistent basic philosophy on the link between working time flexibility, productivity and job creation. It also underscores the importance of decentralized and voluntarist approach based on tailor made collective agreements between Management and Labour, as well as the need to reach a balance between the need for flexible organisation of work which assumes the various existing types of employment contracts and the need to protect workers´ rights.
