Abstract:
This article analyses the results of the mergers between Spanish banks which have taken place in recent years on the basis of a case by case analysis, applying various financial ratios and comparing the figures for them before and after each merger. The figures for these ratios are compared with the corresponding figures for a control group established in each case in line with the characteristics of the organisations which have merged. The ratios considered cover the main indicators of banks´ profitability, efficiency, solvency and dynamism. From the mergers analysed, no clear improvements can be confirmed in the ability to generate profit or in the standards of efficiency in the post-merger organisations, through cost reductions emerge which have enabled them to downsize and thus become more competitive, thus improving their solvency ratios.
