Abstract:
New EU members have been open for FDI for about 15 years now and attracted remarkable amounts in per cápita terms. Most of the FDI inflows in the 1990s were local market oriented, only some countries and some industries became sites of export oriented subsidiaries. More recent manufacturing sector FDI is mainly export oriented. Rising wages and the emergence of further East European locations prompted investors to relocate some activities from the new members. The deeper the integration of a subsidiary into international networks and the higher its competence, the better the chance of it survival and development. In order to make subsidiaries more stable, FDI policy has started to supports networking and upgrading of existing investment projects instead of subsidizing all sorts of FDI inflows.
