Abstract: In the last decades, an increased number of studies find in the social capital, an important part of the explanation to the social economic development of nations, regions or communities. The present article synthesises these different perspectives about the concept of the social capital, so that it can, later on, define operatively the concept and explain the principal mechanisms and processes through which the social capital can lead to development. Finally, there will be presented results of an investigation, that shows in an empirical way, how the employer can use his social capital in order to innovate, increase his competitivity and improve his management results, as far as our study is concerned.
