Abstract: This paper highlights the singularity of the period beginning in 1986 through an analysis of structural breaks applied to Spanish export and import flows of the last four decades. The analysis confirms the existence of a new stage in Spanish foreign trade after Spain´s adhesion to the European Community especially due to the trend change in imports. In exports, the effect of integration was later, after the years of the devaluations of 1992-1993, and was because of the important loss of competitiveness which the Spanish economy suffered during the second half of the eighties.
