Abstract: The paper starts from the analysis of the Spanish companies property and control structures, highlighting the main role of the shareholders among the companies, and then studies in depth the identification of the business groups in Spain. For that purpose, it uses data from almost 200,000 Spanish companies registered in the 2006 Spanish data base (SABI). It also uses data from more than 4,700,000 European companies from the Amadeus data base.
