Abstract:
This paper provides the calculation of total factor productivity (TFP) in ten manufacturing industries for a sample of six developed countries. To achieve it, two non-parametric approaches have been applied. In one of them, the TFP index has been broken down into its two basic components: technological change and efficiency change and the value of the capacity of both national and foreign R&D capital. The results of our estimates suggest that domestic R&D capital and the spillovers from foreign R&D capital are decisive to account for the technological change. On the contrary, efficiency change cannot be explained by variables that are representative of technological capital.
