Abstract: Whilst the liberalization of the air transport market in the European Union has caused a remarkable academic interest, it has focused on the analysis of the networks, the flows and the competiveness leaving aside important aspects. For this reason, this article carries out a balance of the liberalization that, besides studying the evolution of the route by route competiveness, it considers several socio-economic characteristics of the territories involved and outs forward some of the social and environmental costs associated to the process.
