Abstract: This article seeks to examine the main changes undergone by Basque firms over the last thirty years. The article examines four major changes in Basque firms: a shift in the type and size of firms and in their competition strategies (from big individual enterprises to clusters of small and medium enterprises which co-operate and compete with one another, and to corporate groups); a change in the markets served (from a protected regional/national market to an international/global one); a change in technologies, products and solutions (from firms highly dependent on foreign technology to innovative, R&D-intensive firms); and, finally, a change in management style (the dissemination of new management models, a widespread commitment to quality and flexibility and a high degree of use of ICT tools).
