Abstract:
How is patriarchal order maintained in the current phase in which women have reached «formal equality» in civil and political rights? The sexual division of labour is reproduced through a system of public policies that both active and passively determine the greater involvement of women in care work and greater involvement of men to employment. However, contrary to established wisdom in the 20th century, this sexual division of labour only causes social and economic losses without effectively contributing to society as a whole. On the other hand, international evidence suggests that it is possible to change female and male behaviour through the expansion of rights. These examples provide elements for formulating a feminist economic program oriented towards the goal of a more equitable, more efficient and more sustainable society: a society of equal breadwinner/caretaker individuals.
