Abstract:
The population over 65 has remarkably grown in the Basque Country. This change in the age structure, called demographic aging, has come along with a whole discourse and imaginary that goes beyond the process itself. Indeed, it has been pointed out that we live and will live in increasingly aging and inactive societies. In addition, demographic aging is posed as a great threat to both the sustainability of the health system and the public pension system. The objective of this article is to use data from the Basque Country to try to clarify the extent to which the discourse assigned to aging is based on empirical data.
