Abstract: The article begins with an acknowledgement of the emergence of smart specialisation in Europe, before locating the Australian developments in the context created by a priority on emissions reduction and climate action. It provides a brief review of the initial engagement with Smart Specialisation in the region of Gippsland, before providing a more detailed account of the application of smart specialisation to transition in small communities responding to an end to native forest logging. It concludes with an overview of the key elements that distinguish this work as ‘new directions in regional strategies’. While developing very much in an Australian context, it offers insights which can be instructive in Europe and in other parts of the world where sustainable transitions will occur inevitably.
