Modern Money Theory and international law working together1

John D. Haskell

Chapter 7 in The Elgar Companion to Modern Money Theory, 2024, pp 89-97 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In recent years, progressive-orientated academics in economics and international law have become increasingly interested in one another’s fields of study. International lawyers are intent to better engage with ‘political economy’ and financial architectures, and economists are modifying their doctrines and tactics to an understanding that markets and money are institutions of complex legal construction and interpretation. This chapter makes a case for why heterodox economic tradition of Modern Money Theory and ‘critical’ traditions in international law might productively collaborate: on the one hand, looking at similarities between these traditions; on the other hand, examining how these traditions might learn from each other, offering warnings and inspiration.
