Crises and transformations: suggestions from Karl Polanyis works

Michele Cangiani

Chapter 4 in Capitalism in Transformation, 2019, pp 46-59 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The crisis to which neoliberalism has led asks for a reflection on the most general aspects of our society and its history. Karl Polanyi’s theoretical achievements provide relevant suggestions for this purpose. According to him, the fundamental traits of the market-capitalist society reproduce themselves under different “institutional arrangements†or “transformations†resulting from major crises. Can Polanyi’s analysis of the “great transformation†from liberal to corporative capitalism be inspiring for explaining events following his death, such as the crisis of the 1970s and the neoliberal transformation? The reference to Polanyi’s writings, and also to those of a few other scholars of both his time and ours, confirm the depth and topicality of his thought.
