Chapter 3 in Food Loss and Food Waste, 2019, pp 46-68 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter surveys the environmental impacts of FLW and their implications for sustainable development, which have been exacerbated by climate change. Principal among these are the loss of the water used in the production of food and the increase in greenhouse gases caused by the discarding of food in landfill, as well as those generated in producing food which remains uneaten. The chapter also looks at the loss of biodiversity involved in food production and FLW. The chapter discusses the ‘waste hierarchy’ which was promulgated by The European Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) of 19 November 2008 which ranked waste management options according to what was best for the environment. This approach has been followed across the world. However, until recently, omitted from this hierarchy was food waste. This has been rectified in Europe by Directive (EU) 2018/851 of 30 May 2018. The implications of these changes are considered in this chapter.
