Justice and equity in the energy system

.

Chapter 7 in Energy Cultures, 2020, pp 122-144 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The task in this chapter is to lay down a path for pursuing social justice by identifying injustices within the energy system. Utilizing the ‘energy justice framework’ along with a ‘culture of geopolitics’ enables a fuller assessment of injustices and prompt change within the energy system. This chapter equips an energy cultures framework with the tools for a radical critique of injustices and power relations in the domestic and international arena. The critical task is to identify who is regulating social practices, and what are society’s tools to ensure justice in their energy culture. In the production of culture, there is a constant tension and struggle within and between scales. The struggles highlight power relations and particular expressions of culture within domestic and international relations. State and social institutions assert territorial power as a means of geographical dominance or agreement expressed through soft or hard power relations.
