War versus peace: The outcome of a binary process
.
Chapter 3 in The Economics of War, 2019, pp 34-54 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
It is possible to envisage a binary process that may lead to war or peace, depending on the prevalence of one state of the world or another. The factors that cause war and those that cause peace can be identified by contrasting two states of the world: statism versus capitalism, collectivism versus individualism, altruism versus egoism, mysticism versus rationality and evasion versus honesty. This list can be extended to include exceptionalism versus unexceptionalism, greed versus benevolence, nationalism versus humanism, capitalism versus egalitarianism, patriotism versus unpatriotism, dominance versus coexistence and the West versus the Rest.
