Chapter 2 in The Governance of Global Industry Associations, 2022, pp 17-38 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Research has grappled somewhat with industry associations and particular sectors have been studied. However, we need an overview over the conditions facing industry associations in general and we lack a theoretically informed perspective on the behavior of global industry association. This chapter evaluates different strands of research and pinpoints achievements, errors and white spots. It draws on selected insights from studies on business associations and interests groups in comparative politics, research on nongovernmental organizations and non-state actors, and seeks inspiration from international political economy, governance, organization theory and economic sociology. No single of these research traditions can offer a solid foundation for the study of global industry associations, however, and it is important to add new building blocks to create a framework for the study.
