Taxonomic perspectives: the diverse population of global industry associations

Abstract: In the preceding chapter, we discussed various taxonomic problems in relation to the classification of industry association as a subset of business associations. It is clear that industry associations have a strong material foundation as they organize interests related to specific products and services, but it also matters how industries and their boundaries are perceived and formed in business. In this chapter, a further effort is made to describe, classify and analyze the population of industry associations, their various properties and decision-making structures. In recent decades, the population has experienced a growth and the increasing number of associations may lead to fragmentation in the organization of interest, but we also find mergers leading to stronger coordination of interests.
