Leadership: between basic and advanced structures
.
Chapter 6 in The Governance of Global Industry Associations, 2022, pp 101-123 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The leadership of associations must manage a diversity of tasks through complex structures, such as boards, secretariats and committee systems. It is important to attend to many and occasionally conflicting member interests among corporations and national associations ("logic of membership") and, yet, at the same time respond to demands from key interlocutors in their institutional environment ("logic of influence") where associations are expected to represent a unified business voice in exchanges with intergovernmental organization and other actors. This chapter analyzes the leadership of associations and how it has developed and become more professionalized, and it discusses how conflicting demands are addressed in the associations and what kind of mechanisms have been created to solve these.
