Chapter 31 in Research Handbook on Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), 2025, pp 360-371 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter surveys Third World engagement with the environment. It begins by exploring the divergence between Third World and First World understandings of global environmental challenges, some specific environmental issues, and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. It goes on to highlight some key features of TWAIL scholarship in this field. It concludes by considering the challenge that environment concerns pose to all of us who identify as part of the TWAIL movement, as well as all those who work in solidarity with the peoples and places of the Third World whose existence is increasingly precarious and fragile in the face of already occurring and rapidly worsening environmental crises.
