World peace

Chapter 7 in Research Handbook on Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), 2025, pp 66-79 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The Final Communiqué, adopted by the Asian-African Conference held at Bandung in 1955, included a ‘Declaration on the Promotion of World Peace and Cooperation’ which called for ‘friendly cooperation’ for peace. This chapter discusses the trajectories of four dimensions of this vision for peace: achieving self-determination for all peoples who remain subject to alien subjugation and domination; pursuing non-alignment with the Cold War power blocs; fostering friendly relations and international cooperation for peace; and promoting general disarmament. The Declaration's conception of peace requires challenging the imperial hierarchies and structural violences that are deeply embedded in international law and its practises and building a different world order based on friendly cooperation and solidarity, with laws that sustain and enrich life in all its forms. Readers are urged to build on the footholds left by this Third World heritage to help pave cooperative and egalitarian pathways to world peace into the future.
