Philanthropic giving: a developmental cognitive neuroscience perspective

Abstract: While much of our knowledge of the development and motivation for prosocial behaviors and charitable giving derives from psychology, recent forays into our understanding have utilized methods that explore the underlying neural dynamics. In this chapter, we explain four frameworks from developmental neuroscience and neuroeconomics that integrate the extant body of knowledge into philanthropic motivations from both psychology and biology, and summarize the primary findings that support each: theory of mind, dual-systems model, warm-glow giving, and considerations of social convention and ethics. These four approaches provide an organizational structure for future research and application of principles in a wide variety of domains.
