Introduction to the Research Handbook on Global Governance

Cher Weixia Chen and Ruth Houghton

Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on Global Governance, 2025, pp 2-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter introduces the evolving field of global governance, highlighting discussions from a 2016 Durham University workshop. It traces the development of this research handbook, emphasising inclusivity, interdisciplinarity, and the decolonisation of Global North-dominated frameworks. The handbook is organised into six parts – covering theoretical foundations, law and accountability, human rights, environmental and economic governance, peace and conflict, and historical and alternative futures – and integrates innovative frameworks such as intersectionality, Marxism, and queer theory. Chapter 1 underscores the urgency of reimagining governance to tackle complex global issues effectively while advocating for equity, collaboration, and diverse perspectives.
