Overview of approaches to measurement and empirical analysis of quality of life and well-being

Abstract: Approaches that have been used over time to investigate quality of life (QOL)/well-being- the objective approach, the subjective approach and an integrative approach- are discussed, including the collection of data used to measure objective indicators and subjective assessments/evaluations of QOL/well-being, and the modelling frameworks that researchers have used to investigate the interrelationships between them at different levels of scale. In particular, the social indicators and the life domains frameworks are discussed, along with the methodological approaches used to measure and model the nature and strength of the mediating effects of objective attributes of people and of the situational/environmental context in which they live on their perceived subjective assessment of their overall QOL and of life domains in the integrative approach to investigate QOL/well-being. How those investigations are enhanced through application of geographic information system (GIS) tools are discussed. The chapter outlines a number of key examples of the model frameworks developed and applied by researchers.
