Chapter 7 in Plato's Economics, 2021, pp 111-136 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Plato looked to an elite of philosopher-rulers, appointed and not elected, who run the state using reason rather than grassroots consultation. They must be carefully selected by senior leaders who will have been monitoring them from an early age in order to spot excellence. They will abandon property and family in order to be impartial.
