The mother of all myths: do the royals attract tourists?

Abstract: The monarchists arguing for the ability of the royal family to attract tourism do not seem to be sure of the mechanism whereby the royals manage to attract tourism. Three explanations are presented for the ability of the royal family to attract tourists. The first is the attraction of the royal persona: that tourists are eager to get a glimpse of one or more royals. In the absence of survey evidence on this proposition, it is hard to sell. The second explanation is that foreign tourists are attracted by royal events. Again, only survey evidence, which is unavailable, can give credibility to this argument. The third explanation is that tourists are attracted to the United Kingdom (UK) because they want to visit and pay to see royal estate such as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Tens of good reasons, which are more plausible than the desire to see the royals or experience the spectacle of royal events, can be suggested to explain why people want to visit the UK.
