Travel behavior and travel behavior analysis

Konstadinos G. Goulias

Chapter 2 in Handbook of Travel Behaviour, 2024, pp 16-29 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Travel behaviour analysis aims to understand how traveller values, norms, attitudes, and constraints lead to observed behaviour. Traveller values and attitudes refer to motivational, cognitive, situational, and dispositional factors that determine human behaviour. This chapter provides a review starting from early applications, studying travel behaviour focused primarily on the analysis and modelling of travel demand, with roots in theories and analytical methods from a variety of scientific fields. Then trace the development of travel behaviour research from time geography ideas and microeconomic choice models to today’s integrated land use transportation models, activity-based microsimulation, choice experiments, and the use of Big Data analytics to understand and predict travel behaviour in space and time.
