The PPP research terrain in a contested era

Carsten Greve and Graeme A. Hodge

Chapter 1 in A Research Agenda for Public–Private Partnerships and the Governance of Infrastructure, 2022, pp 3-32 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter introduces the theme of the research agenda, traces the recent events in literature on public-private partnerships and notes the transition to the concept of infrastructure governance. The evolving research agenda is presented as well as an overview of recent special issues in journals on PPPs. Another indicator of the research agenda is the number and content of PhD projects dealing with PPPs, and the chapter provides an overview of PhDs from Northern Europe and Australia. A 'gallery tour' of important publications in the PPP literature is provided before reflections on the issue of performance in PPPs. The recent systematic literature reviews published is commented upon, and the chapter ends with an overview of the different academic disciplines that are present in the volume as well as laying out the structure of the book.
