Abstract:
This chapter outlines the relevance of Marxist scholarship to understandings of power in contemporary political economic systems. In particular, it focuses on Marxian understanding of power within the urban planning system including its origins, evolution and role in planning scholarship and practice as well as briefly outline the dichotomies within Marxist theoretical traditions. The chapter also takes a critical view of the role of Marxism in planning scholarship and asks what the future holds for Marxian understanding of power in the planning system.
