Managing, preserving and unlocking wealth through FinTech

Grace Headinger, Lauren Cohen and Zhaoheng Gong

Chapter 11 in Research Handbook on Alternative Finance, 2024, pp 250-281 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In nearly every generation, a sentiment like Einstein’s has been expressed as a cautionary tale to constrain the development and application of technology. In spite of these calls, technology has time and again proven its utility and ability to improve across and upon industries, geographies, and demographies. FinTech holds this same promise. From startups to government sovereigns, FinTech has potential to modernize markets and democratize access to capital, along with creating novel mechanisms and products heretofore undiscovered. In this chapter, we give a broad overview of five areas of recent FinTech development: (1) personal finance, (2) real estate, (3) insurance, (4) investment management, and (5) frontier asset classes. Moreover, we then conclude by going to the edge of the frontier of current FinTech, making predictions on which areas we believe hold the most promise moving ahead.
